John Muir - Scottish-born American naturalist (1838 – 1914)
Hidden on the mountaintop it is not easy to find but worth the trip. Locals love spending a Saturday or Sunday lunch at Alpe Vicania after having hiked there to earn their meal.
You can walk from either Carona or Melide (both approx. 1,5 hours) or hike from Pazzallo (3,5hours) and make it a day's outing. If you are not feeling the urge to walk, you can park the car along the cobbled road and just walk the last bit through the forest. There is also a lovely trail leading from Pazzallo to Alpe Vicania for bike riders.
Although the surroundings are rustic the menu items are not. The menu is short but full of fresh, local, seasonal items. Just like a lot of good Swiss restaurants the wine list is extensive.
So, next time you are planning your weekend, consider visiting Alpe Vicania.
