A Japanese artist full of tiny ideas

My latest instagram discovery is a Japanese artist, Tatsuya Tanaka, who is full of ideas. In the time of COVID-19, disposable face masks as well as toilet paper have made headlines across the globe. These everyday items are subverted to create the tiny sets of outdoor adventures.

A folded mask serves as a small tent, toilet paper descends from a wall holder as a snowy ski hill, and a thermometer outfitted with wheels transforms into a speedy racecar. For more of the miniature scenes from the Japanese artist and photographer head to Instagram, where he publishes a new scene every day.

4 unique mountain day trips from Lugano

Escape from the heat and head to the mountains... if only for a day.

Enjoy breakfast in town, lunch at 1'500 metres above sea level and visit the Longlake festival in the evening - only in Switzerland. It will take just a few clicks to book your excursion now, enabling you to travel by public transport according to your own individual schedule, taking in our breathtaking world of mountains and glaciers. Where will your Swiss adventure begin? Click here to choose your town from 10 different Swiss towns: https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ch/experiences/experience-tour/mountain-daytrips

As for Ticino, once you've enjoyed your espresso under the palm trees of Lugano head to a nearby panoramic mountain view of Monte Generoso, Monte Lema, Monte Bré or Cardada Cimetta. The trips last between 3 and 5 hours. The adventure ranges from moonlit hikes to sunrise treks or even enchanting chestnut woods. You can ride the oldest steam train still in operation in Switzerland, look through the Observatory’s telescope every Sunday and the truly brave can marvel at the landscape from the air by paragliding from the top.

Happy Birthday, Roger

Today we celebrate the birthday of the most famous Swiss sportsman EVER... Roger Federer. Known as one of the greatest tennis players in history, Roger Federer holds the record for most Grand Slam men’s singles championships at 20.

The tennis star was born on August 8, 1981, in Basel, to a Swiss father and South African mother. Apart from his game, Federer is also a master of languages, with ability to speak six of them. He holds dual citizenship of Switzerland and South Africa.

Few know that Federer was awarded an honorary doctorate by his home university in Basel, in November 2017 for his role in enhancing the reputation of his country. He was considered “unsuitable” for the Swiss military back in 2003. He also holds the record of becoming the first living person to be commemorated in Swiss currency in December 2019.

His latest trick was to pay two special fans a surprise visit for a game of rooftop tennis in a new campaign for Barilla. The fans in question are two young Italian girls who, during Italy’s coronavirus lockdown earlier this year, created a tennis court between two rooftops in their hometown of Finale Ligure. Little did they know this wold lead to a lunch date with their hero Roger Federer!
