All Expats in Lugano and around. Listen up! Are you ready for the first major exhibition dedicated to Expats in Ticino? Yes, the number of Lugano expats is solwly but steadily growing and now it is time to meet at the first Expat Expo in Ticino.

A very special event is being organized for Sunday, March 11th at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Lugano - the first Expat Expo in Ticino. For some years, these Expos have taken place in other parts of Switzerland. They are impressive events - professional and well organized with a community based atmosphere. Many of the local clubs will be there, along with businesses large and small, schools, and services that cater to the English speaking community. In total over 60 exhibitors are paticipating. Please spread the word - and plan to stop by! The Expo will take place from 11:00-17:00, and admission is free. Ever since I started my Lugano blog, one of the things that fascinated me most was a feature called "Google Friend Connect". Basically it lets you click "Follow" on the Blogger tab if you like a blog.

And wow, it opened a whole new world to me. I could browse through all the blogs that tickled my fancy - and had therefore connected with - by going down my personalized reading list.

I must have been saying something right, something funny and/or something noteworthy since over 100 people are following my Expat with Kids blog about Lugano. This gives me tremendous motivation and is one of the things that keeps me going. For that, "Google Friend Connect" followers, I thank you from the bottom of my happy heart.

I recently found out that blogger is removing this feature effective March 1, 2012, this means if you follow me through "Google Friend Connect", chances are beginning March you won't be able to receive updates from me. The good news for “Blogger” (Google hosted blogs) is that it does not appear that they will be losing GFC. I don’t know what the future holds for that decision since it is clear that Google is not getting out of the product what they had expected. Read Google’s announcement.

Officially it is the children's skiing holiday but we call it the "Swiss holiday". We return religiously - no matter which part of the globe we live in - to spend a family holiday on the slopes of Switzerland.

We gobble chocolate, we devour cheese fondues and raclettes, we appreciate the Swiss neatness and engulfe in fresh mountain air. We spend 10 days curing our Swiss homesickness by eating our way through local culinary delicacies, shopping trips to the Coop and listening to Swiss German radio.

Nothing - absolutely nothing - beats standing on top of a snowy peak, overlooking the sundrenched Alps on a clear winter day just before you hit the pristine powder snow and hear it crunch below your skis. It is the only sound you hear .... until I start yodeling! What a liberating feeling.

International Mother Language Day

I have followed my husband around the globe on his Interantional career path and am very happy to do so. I did set one - yes, only one - condition before we got married and flew off to Buenos Aires nearly 15 years ago. He had to promise me that ONCE a year I would be able to go "home" to Switzerland to ski. This has been our tradition ever since we met and I have the firm intention to carry on as long as my bones will carry me down the slopes. It is my moment of homesickness cure that allows my kids and me to connect with part of our roots. The children love the snow and can't wait to go skiing. Even my Neapolitan hubby has taken a penchant to the sport, although I won't deny that he prefers the après-ski experience!

All this to tell you that I'll be gone for a week while I hit the slopes in the Berner Oberland. Given the snow situation we are ecstatic that we will have fresh powder snow and hopefully lots of sunshine!

Carnevale in Ticino 2012

The definition of Carnival: A festival celebrated with merriment and revelry in Roman Gatholic countries during the week before Lent, during a few days (three to ten) before Lent, ending with Shrove Tuesday. Any merrymaking, feasting, or masquerading, especially when overstepping the bounds of decorum; a time of riotous excess.

Carnevale in Ticino is as big a deal as it is in Basel just that nobody knows about it! That is if you don't live in the Ticino. We don't have skiing holidays like the rest of Switzerland, we have Carnevale holidays .... eventough everybody goes skiing!!!

Bellinzona's carnival is Ticino's most famous celebration. Following the Roman-rite, the party starts on Thursday night when the keys of the city are handed over to King Rabadan, who will rule the happy crowds until the following Tuesday. But not only Rabadan: many more carnivals are warming up the cold winter days in the Canton.

In Locarno, the "Stranociada" is an appointment not to be missed on Friday night, where the old town is invaded by masks, little tents, Guggen, music and pure fun until early in the morning.

The Nebiopoli Carnival in Chiasso is the most important Roman-rite carnival in the Sottoceneri region, and its peculiarity is the absence of a king: in fact, the hand-over of power during the carnival goes to a Prime Minister, who transforms the town into the "Free Republic of Nebiopoli"'. During the "republican week", masked groups and Guggen transform the streets of the centre into a place where fun rules. The peak of the celebrations is Mardi Gras Nebiopoli masked parade, featuring large numbers of floats, groups, bands and Guggenmusik.

In many different locations throughout the Canton, celebrations take place only at the end of the Carnival week, following the Ambrosian rite. Biasca, Brissago and Tesserete can pride themselves with some of the busiest Carnivals, with their Saturday parades featuring masked groups, floats and Guggen music bands. The large masked parties in public spaces all over the town centres start on Thursday night, with games, free risotto for everybody, many confetti and bands performing live music. A wild world of colors, masks and sounds, eventually winding down only on Sunday morning.

Each one of us celebrates Valentine's Day differently. Some don't celebrate it at all. Other can't sleep at night wondering who their secret admirer might be?

My unfortunate luck is that Italians don't "DO" cards. Not for Christmas, not for birthdays or anniversaries and therefore I will not receive a Valentine's card. My hubby will make up by surprising me with a great pressie, for sure!

In the meantime, I'll nibble on a piece of chocolate and share some fun facts about Valentine's Day with you.

Valentine's Day related history:
- The ancient Romans celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia on February 14th in honor of Juno, the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses. Juno was also the goddess of women and marriage.
- Many believe the 'X' symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an 'X.' The 'X' was then kissed to show their sincerity.
- Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future spouse.
- In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve."
- In 1537, England's King Henry VII officially declared February 14th the holiday of St. Valentine's Day.
- The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife.
- Every Valentine's Day, the Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare's lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet.

Chocolate:
- Casanova, well known as "The World's Greatest Lover," ate chocolate to make him virile.
- Physicians of the 1800's commonly advised their patients to eat chocolate to calm their pining for lost love.
- Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine's Day in the late 1800's.
- More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine's Day.

Flowers:
- 73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine's Day are men, while only 27 percent are women.
- The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love.
- Red roses are considered the flower of love because the color red stands for strong romantic feelings.

Call me a hopeless romantic, because I am, but Whitney had a song for every moment in my life. Whitney Houston released her debut album, "Whitney Houston," in February 1985 to wide acclaim. Rolling Stone magazine called her "one of the most exciting new voices in years". I was 18 when I first heard her voice. She accompanied me through my ups and downs at boarding school - and believe me there where many!!!! Until this day she remains my favourite singer of all times.

Daughter of the great soul-and-gospel vocalist Cissy Houston, cousin to both Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick and goddaughter to Aretha Franklin, Houston's family background seemed a magically appropriate fusion of both the grit and the glamour of late-20th-century African-American pop music. She was a pop phenomenon capable of breaching all manner of audience boundaries whether of race, age or geographic origin.You couldn't find a more auspicious template for great expectations. And she delivred time after time until yesterday....

Today I shared all her greatest hits with my 8-year old daughter. She now will carry on dancing to Whitney's songs, just like I did!

No, I have not been pregnant over the last 9 months. No, I have not gone through labour pains. Been there, done that and happy to have two healthy pre-teenagers.

This is a blog baby. I just can't help it. I adore writing, posting, adding photos, researching the details and the wrapping it all up in a colourful package to present to you!

Since I was a little girl I have had a passion for cooking and a curiosity for any new recipe which is easy, uncomplicated and fast to prepare. Desserts are my speciality but I can bash up a 5 course meal if I have to in a couple of hours.

Over the past decades I have collected endless snips and snaps from magazines all over the world, saved recipes that tickled my interest on internet and gathered yummy secrets from my International friends.

Are you ready for the Super Bowl XLVI?

As I am writing this post I am watching the Pre-Show of the Super Bowl 2012 waiting for the clock to strike twelve which is when the game starts. I most probably won't make it to halftime, eventhough the thought of watching Madonna's show dedicated to her Dad does keep me hanging.

In the meantime I thought I'd preview the most anticipated commercials with my readers. With more than 111 million fans expected to watch this year's Big Game, the Super Bowl is an advertiser's biggest stage. And they're willing to pay $3.5 million for a 30-second spot.

They're willing to pay because last year a record 111 million Americans tuned in to see the game, making it the most-watched single program of any kind in U.S. television history.

Many of this year's commercials are already online. About 20 of about 36 Super Bowl advertisers put their TV commercials on the Internet prior to today's game. That's a big difference from previous years when only a handful of companies leaked their TV ads.

Let's take a look at some of the TV ads people might be talking about tomorrow:

Full Moon, fresh Snow and a Spirit of Adventure. Combine the three and you have the "Sciata & Racchettata al Chiar di Luna".

On Saturday, February 4, 2012, the town of Airolo-Pesciüm are organizing the yearly Moonlight skiing adventure. The meeting point is at 19:00 at the bottom of the cable car. You'll be able to hit the slopes until 21:00.

For some, snowshoes (racchetta da neve) may be a good alternative to skiing and an opportunity to walk the brand new trails for snowtrekking which just opened this Winter season 2011/12.

After skiing or "racchettata" the restaurant Pesciüm will be serving dinner. You'll be able choose between a good hot meal or a delicious fondue. After dinner, the cable car will bring you back to the valley.

Please bring a headlamp, especially if you plan to try the snowshoe adventure.

Ready for the sirens?

So we all know that the Swiss are extremly cautious citizens. They have the right protection for every possible situtation. The prejudice that Switzerland is a country of insurance is absolutely true. The avereage Swiss household (2,23 persons) will spend approx. CHF 1700.-/month for mandatory insurance, including health insurance and contributions to social security or else CHF 20,400.- per year.
Did you know, however, that more than CHF 50 billion are spent each year for non-compulsory insurance, that's CHF 6588.- per head.

But it doesn't stop there.

Be prepared because on February 1st, 2012 the annual test of the sirens will be held in Switzerland between 13:30 and 15:00. 8500 mobile and stationary civil-defense sirens which can alert 99% of the population, will be tested. Sirens for this alert have a regularly ascending and descending tone lasting a minute and repeated after a two-minute interval. Following that, the 700 water alarms, will resonate twelve low sounds lasting 20 seconds each between 14.15 and 15.00 in downstream areas of dams.

Every year, on the first Wednesday of February, Switzerland's sirens are tested. During this test, general alert sirens as well as the sirens near dams are tested to see if they are in working order. The population is informed of the test days ahead by radio, television, teletext and newspapers. The siren tests do not require the population to take any special measures.

Introduced during wartime, they are now used to alert the population to impending catastrophes or water dangers such as flooding. The population is instructed to inform those around them to proceed inside. Once inside, people are instructed to listen to emergency broadcasts made by the Swiss Radio and/or TV.

The ice covering Lake St. Moritz is too thin. Now for most people this is not big news, however, for the rich and famous VIPs and for the Polo lovers of this world, it's like not celebrating Christmas.

The St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow is the world’s most prestigious winter polo tournament. Four high-goal teams battle for the coveted Trophy on the frozen surface of Lake St. Moritz. The unusual conditions on snow, the unaccustomed location at 1,800 metres above sea level and the cosmopolitan character of St. Moritz make the tournament truly unique – as attested by approximately 15,000 spectators from every corner of the world who make the pilgrimage to Lake St. Moritz at the end of January each year.

The St. Moritz Lake Commission, however, has decided not to grant clearance for erection of the infrastructure on the surface of the lake due to a too thinner ice layer. The risk of the ice collapsing is too great. For the first time in the tournament’s 28-year history, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow has had to be cancelled due to the weather conditions.

After various load-bearing-capacity tests on the iced-over surface of Lake St. Moritz, the safety experts reached the conclusion yesterday that, for safety reasons, they cannot grant clearance for erection of the necessary tournament infrastructure on the surface of the lake. The regulations on the use of the surface ice are strict: the ice across the whole lake must be no thinner than 20 centimetres. Each square metre must be able to bear up to 350 kilograms. If these requirements are not met, no structures can be erected on the lake. “We were hoping for a last-minute change in the weather so that a few nights at sub-zero temperatures could freeze the lake sufficiently. Unfortunately Mother Nature has let us down,” comments Bernhard Pöllinger, Head of Sports & Infrastructure at St. Moritz Polo Corporation.

So, we all know kids can be stubborn. I wonder who they get it from?

It's infuriating, annoying, irritating, maddening, provoking, displeasing, aggravating and just plain exasperating for parents but.... there is a positive side to all these bad vibes. Aha, got your attention? Keep reading this list I found on the babysitter site: Find a babysitter!

There are many ways headstrong children can have an advantage over the more docile counterparts. Here are 8 reasons being stubborn can be good for a kid.

1.) Perseverance – A stubborn child is going to be much better at accomplishing difficult tasks because they have perseverance. If at first they don’t succeed they will keep trying until they get the results they desire. From learning to tie their shoes to figuring out a complicated math problem, these kids will doggedly keep trying until they get it done. This is a great advantage over other children who tend to give up easily.

2.) Can’t be bullied – Childhood bullies have gotten to be a big problem, so stubbornness can give a kid the toughness they need to stand up for themselves. No playground bully is going to push them around. The defiance they show to their parents easily translates to other situations, so the local bully doesn’t stand a chance.

3.) Mental fortitude – This toughness will also help kids to develop the strong mental fortitude they need as they grow from childhood to adults. Mental toughness will help them to succeed in many aspects of their lives and make it easier for them to cope with stress or traumatic events. The demands of college, the military or a prestigious career are more easily met by the people who used to be stubborn kids.

4.) Schoolwork – Children who give up easily are going to have a harder time learning difficult problems in their schoolwork than those who are more resolute. Whether this results in getting better grades depends on each child’s mental capabilities, but stubbornness can be an advantage to even learning disabled children. Teachers and parents should encourage stubborn kids to channel their determination into their homework.

5.) Employment – Once kids get old enough to get a job, the stubborn ones will be more likely to find employment and keep it. It takes strong perseverance to find work in a bad economy, especially for teens. If their determination pays off, their employers will be pleased if they apply their stubbornness to their work ethic. Stubborn kids can be good workers.

6.) Sports – Another way a headstrong kid can excel is in sports. What they may lack in physical ability can be made up for with sheer determination. Stubborn kids are very competitive and will not give up until they make the team or are the best in their field. They can channel their obstinacy into succeeding at whatever sport they choose.

7.) Successful career – That successful doctor, lawyer or actor you admire probably used to be a stubborn child. The bullheaded kids are much better equipped to succeed at whatever careers they choose. Their ability to persevere will vault them to the top of the corporate ladder.

8.) Survival – Another reason being stubborn can be good for a kid is pure survival. Whether it’s illness, injury or a natural disaster, those who aren’t willing to give up will overcome any obstacle to survive. Stubbornness is a key element in personal survival.

Today was one of those days where all the time, effort, dedication and passion that I put into blogging has been highly rewarding. I might add the compliment (and it was a big one) came from a total stranger. I am not sure how many readers regularly read my Lugano blog but I do hope I am entertaining some people out there other than myself. Once in a blue moon I receive a little message telling me that ...yes .... my blog is useful, informative and fun to read. And this reader just hit the nail right on the head. She described exactly what I am aiming to convey with my blog and what it is all about! I couldn't be happier.

I am so thrilled about this compliment that I just can't help but to share it with my readers. Here is the lady's recommendation:

Lisa's stewed lentil recipe

Looking for an inspiration for a meatless dinner I asked my vegetarian friend what she was making her family for dinner that night. This was her suggestion: Stewed lentils with carrots and tomatoes

Ingredients:
2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
2 cups large diced yellow onions (2 onions)
2 cups large diced carrots (3-4 carrots)
3 garlic cloves , minced (about 1 tbls.)
1 (28 ounce) can plum tomatoes
1 cup french green lentil (7 ounces)
2 cups vegetable stock (or chicken stock)
2 teaspoons mild curry powder
2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves , chopped
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 tablespoon good quality red wine vinegar

Preparations:
1. ) Heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the onions and carrots and cook over medium low heat for 8-10 minutes, until the onions start to brown. Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon. Add the garlic and cook 1 more minute. Be careful not to burn the garlic.

2.) Meanwhile, place the canned tomatoes, including the juice, in the bowl of a food processor and pulse several times until the tomatoes are coarsely chopped. Rinse and pick over the lentils to make sure there are no stones.

3.) Add the tomatoes, lentils, broth, curry powder, thyme, salt, and pepper to the pan. Raise the heat to bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer covered for about 40 minutes, until the lentils are tender. Check occasionally to be sure the liquid is still simmering.

4.) Remove from the heat and allow the lentils to sit covered for another 10 minutes. Add the vinegar. Season to taste and serve hot. Enjoy!

Sweet memories of Parco Ciani

Today would have been an ideal today for a stroll through Parco Ciani .... in my mind! I am stitting in drizzly, rainy Paris and wondering when I will next spot the sunshine. My kids refuse to visit yet another museum and my hubby (exceptionally) had to work this weekend.

So, as my mind drifts back to the lake of Lugano, I imagine myself taking a deep breath of fresh, crisp air that forebodes the snow! I close my eyes and .... see for yourself...

In 1912, the Parco Ciani estate was bought by the city of Lugano for more than 1.5 million francs. Professor Angelo Pizzorno made this comment in Consiglio Comunale (council meeting) :"This is not crazy pointless luxury; it is a shrewd investment by a city whose moral and economic standing is due in great part to the assets of its natural beauty."

For me this 63,000 square metre park constitutes the city’s green lung where I can recover from the hustle and bustle of everyday life as I walk along paths lined by magnificent centuries-old trees. And when the sun shines .... it is pure luxury!

Swiss Education System

The education system of the multilingual and federally structured Switzerland is unique because it is firmly rooted in the local municipalities, cantons and language regions. The primary responsibility lies with the 26 cantons. The federal authorities and the cantons share responsibility for post-compulsory education. The cantons and their local municipalities finance about 87% (2005) of public educational expenditures.

Due to the complexity of the system and the current differences between the cantons, the descriptions here provide only an overview. Contact your district or community local education department (Divisione della scuola) for details on your local schools particularly as Switzerland is undergoing an important period of change with regard to some key aspects of its education system which will make it much easier to harmonize systems between cantons, known as the HarmoS system.

KEY FEATURES
According to the Federal Department of Education, “Most students in Switzerland (95%) complete pre-school and compulsory schooling at the state school in the municipality in which they live. 5% attend a private school”. State schools play an important role in integration: children who have different social, linguistic and cultural backgrounds all attend the same school. If a child is schooled in the Swiss system there is no charge and most school expenses are covered by the local community. Key features which differ from other countries are that children are expected to be more independent, for example going to and from school even at kindergarten age without adult supervision, Wednesday afternoons are free, there is no school uniform, most children go home for lunch and children are assessed continuously rather than by blocks of exams at the end of the school year with marks awarded for all the major subjects each semester. Two dates are set each year when parents are allowed to observe classes throughout the day which gives you a good feel for what your children are experiencing.

Be aware that if you are planning a trip home to visit family, written permission must be sought from the school authorities if it cuts into school time. Absenteeism and lateness are taken very seriously in Switzerland, and parents can be fined for not complying with the guidelines.

THE SWISS SYSTEM OR PRIVATE SCHOOLING?
You will need to make a decision as to whether your child will attend a state school or a private school. Although the temptation is for many International families to favour private schools the Swiss system should not be lightly dismissed. It offers a good standard of education with many advantages.

There are huge benefits of learning a second language and the younger your children the easier it will be for them to adapt to the new language and culture.

KINDERGARTEN
Depending on the canton and community in which you live, Swiss kindergarten is available free to children from three, four or five years of age. In Ticino your child must turn three years of age by September 30th to be eligible to enter kindergarten at the start of the coming school year. Children born after that date must wait until the next school year. However, due to the changes in the system, be sure to check with your local school board for accurate cut-off dates.

Be aware that kindergarten here is viewed as a place where children learn to socialise but are not expected to read or write. An unusual interesting alternative to conventional kindergarten is the "Waldkindergarten" where children are based outdoors and explore the natural environment.

PRIMARY SCHOOL
It is mandatory in all cantons for all children to receive nine years of schooling after kindergarten. Children spend five years at primary school. If attending a Swiss primary school there is normally no choice as to which they attend and this is allocated by the local school authority. The five years are split into two cycles, normally with one teacher for each cycle. Teaching is organised from about 08:30 to midday when children usually go home for lunch, returning in the afternoon at around 14.00.
Academic subjects include Maths, Language, Science, History, Geography, Sports, Music, Crafts and Art. The teaching of a foreign languages - a second national language - also begins at the primary level. These are introduced at varying stages depending upon the cantonal guidelines. Religious Studies is optional and parents may withdraw their children from this if they wish.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS
In Canton Ticino, at the end of primary school children attend the local secondary school (Scuola Media) for the next four years. After the second year of Scuola Media they are devided into two different groups according to their grade average in Maths and German.

At the end of Scuola Media, students can decide to continue school for a further three years at the Gymnasium (Liceo), attend a specialised vocational school (scuole professionali) or enter an apprenticeship. The Swiss consider their apprenticeship system second to none.

The Gymnasium system is aimed at those children intent on a route to higher education at University.

UNIVERSITY
The first university in Switzerland was founded in 1460 in Basel, with a faculty of medicine. This place has a long tradition of chemical and medical research in Switzerland. In total, there are 12 Universities in Switzerland; ten of them are managed by the cantons, while two federal institutes of technology, ETHZ in Zurich and EPFL in Lausanne, are under the responsibility of the federal state.

In addition, there are seven regional associations of Higher Education Institutions for Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen) which require vocational education and a special "Berufsmatura" to study. Switzerland has the second highest rate of foreign students in tertiary education, after Australia.

5 key reflection when moving with kids

Moving remains a challenge but it has become a sort of a game for us. As a family we have moved seven times since 1998. It is very easy as couple, things get complicated when children arrive but the older the kids grow the it tricker it gets.

In theory a move sounds great. But kids don't always see the disruption to their settled routines in the same light. Of course, there are strong arguments in favour of an International upbringing, even if your children don't necessarily appreciate them at the time.

The grown-ups may fret about schools and a family-friendly culture. Children have more important priorities: where to get cheap video games, decent burgers and long hours in front of the television.

Following are some key considerations to bear in mind when moving abroad with children:

1) Age
In general it is more difficult to take older children out of their existing school environment, particularly if they are at, or approaching, crunch exam years. And they are more likely to have friends they will be unwilling to leave (and for which they will curse you at high volume!).

2) Location and Cultural Similarities
The degree of disruption and subsequent integration also depends on where you are moving to. Your children will have a closer cultural affinity to some countries than others, which should make the transition easier, especially if there is no language barrier to overcome. And if you're close enough to get back home for frequent visits to see extended family and friends so much the better.

3) Education
How good is the system in your target destination? What quality of education will your children receive? How large are the schools and the classes within them (smaller schools and class sizes may be less daunting as a new entrant)?

Do you anticipate sending your children to an International school along with other expatriate kids, or will they go to the local one? An International school may offer less initial readjustment - especially if you are moving to a country that speaks a different language - but in the longer term local schools may help your children integrate better into the wider community.

4) Pleasure in Leisure
It's important your children see tangible benefits from moving abroad, and being able to offer them the chance to engage in their favorite pastimes, or try out new ones, is one way of doing that.

Perhaps they'll be able to take up surfing or horse riding, or go skiing on weekends? Maybe you'll have a swimming pool in your back garden?

The flip side of course is to guard against SBS - Spoilt Brat Syndrome!

5) Health and Safety
The quality of health care provision you can expect to receive in your target country is one factor in these considerations (and let's face it, with kids you know you'll be using it!).

But health is also about staying well. And that means having decent drinking water, good sanitation, access to good quality foodstuffs, low levels of environmental pollutants, and so on.

Then there is personal safety. And what about the prevalence of drug use, racial and religious intolerance, sex discrimination, sexual assaults, child abuse?

There's no need to start hyperventilating over every possible form of harm that could come to your child, but as a parent it's only natural to consider these things.

Children may be flexible, but don't underestimate how tough it can be for them to be wrenched from their small, secure worlds and thrust into a new one. So ask yourself this - will they thank you in the long run?

The answer will be YES if you give them a good example to follow by approaching your new adventure positively and with the right spirit. It WILL rub off onto your kids eventually!

1.) Prepare children for a world with great diversity by teaching respect & tolerance.
2.) Give them opportunities to make responsible decisions, to gain self-esteem.
3.) Encourage & praise. But do not be afraid to discipline, to limit freedom of action.
4.) Let your children know you are always ready to listen to their questions & problems.
5.) Provide sex education & guidance.
6.) Offer love that is unconditional but not over-indulgent.
7.) Never abuse or allow others to abuse children physically or emotionally.

La torta dei Re Magi - Three Kings' cake recipe

In Switzerland, the Three Kings cake is made from sweet yeast dough, which is formed into balls, arranged in a flower-shape and sprinkled with almonds and coarse sugar.

There are various types of Three Kings' cakes found throughout Switzerland. All have a white plastic king figure “hidden” inside. The person who finds this piece is then “King or Queen for the Day” meaning he or she gets to choose what to do during that day and also what chores to avoid. No washing dishes, no cleaning up, no cooking?!

The Three Kings' cake is one of the most popular traditions in Switzerland. At the Iowa AG alone, which is Migros' bakery wholesale distributor produced over 500'000 pieces in 2000. His rival Coop managed to sell over 250,000. This is without counting the hundred of thousands cakes sold in bakeries throughout the country. The total sales amount to approx 1.5 million cakes. Now beat that. No other celebration is so widely spread across this tiny, multi-cultured country.

Most Swiss buy their Epiphany cake at the local bakery or supermarket.
However, home-made always tastes best. Following is an easy and fast recipe to make with your kids. And who knows, if you're lucky, you might not even have to do the washing up!!!

Ingredients:
500gr flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3 tablespoons sugar
20gr (1/2 dice) fresh yeast, crumbled
60gr butter
1/2 lemon, grated rind
4 tablespoons raisins
3dl milk, warmed

Decoration:
1 egg, beaten
Sugar crysals, almond leaves

Preparation:
Mix flour, salt, sugar and yeast. Add the rest of the ingredients and knead for about 10 minutes unti a smooth dough has formed.

Cover dough and let rise for 2 hours until it has doubled in volume.

Form 8 servings, each weighing approximately 80gr.

Stick a king or a coin in one of the balls.

Form the remaining dough into a large ball and place on a baking sheet lined tray with the smaller balls distributed evenly around it.

Let stand for covered for another 30 minutes at room temperature to rise.

Brush with egg.

Bake for approx. 30 minutes in the bottom half of the pre-heated 180° C oven. Cool on a wire rack and then decorate!

The “Swiss Way” to eat the "Torta dei Re Magi" is with a good cheese selection, or butter, jam and hot chocolate at breakfast, lunch OR supper time!

Christmas with "la famiglia" in Napoli

So, I am officially back from holiday and therefore back in action. Just to give you a taste of Southern Italy and what being married to a Neapolitan means, I am sharing some impressions of a romantic Christmas evening stroll along the bay of Naples in Via Caracciolo.

Castel dell'Ovo (in Italian, Egg Castle) is a castle located on the former island of Megaride, now a peninsula, on the gulf of Naples. The castle's name comes from a legend about the Roman poet Virgil, who had a reputation in medieval times as a great sorcerer, that he put a magical egg into the foundations to support the fortifications.

One of the finest of traditional Italian songs is “Santa Lucia”. At the time that this song came into being, there was no Italy as we know it today. There was, however, a kingdom called "Naples and Sicily", where Santa Lucia, a Catholic saint, was revered, therefore the waterfront district in Naples is called “Santa Lucia”, where of course small craft as well as ships were moored, and that explains the name of the song.

The song was collected and transcribed from the Neapolitan dialect into standard Italian in 1849 by Teodoro Cottrau. I’ve never heard anyone singing any version except the Neapolitan version, which was sung by Caruso, Lanza, Pavarroti and others.

Welcome back my dear readers and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Starting off the new year on a happy note, I thought I'd share this little anecdote with you.

My Non-Swiss friends say the Swiss just love baby talk.

For example, they just can't drink a regular coffee and eat a normal-sized croissant like the rest of us. No, they have to have as "Käffeli" in a "Tässli" with amene "Gipfeli", "Brötli" or "Weggli" and "es bitzeli butter".

Some, of course, must have their "Müesli". Isn't that nice? The men, because they are toughies, go out in the evening to a "Beizli" for "es Bierli" or perhaps even "es Tröpfli Wyy", but naturally not more than "es Einerli" because a decilitre of wine costs five "Stützli" or more, not to mention "as Cüpfli" of champagne.

The real purpose of this "Gschichtli", however, is to tell you about a "Schätzli" I once had by the name of Ruthli. She was a real cutie barbie kind of girlie. I would go down to the "Strössli" to her "Hüsli" for a "Bsüechli" with a bouquet of "Blüemli", knock on her door and say: "Schätzli, gisch mer es Schmützli?" She would then give me a teeny-weeny, itsy-bitsy kiss and we would sit on a "Bänkli" in her "Gärtli" for as "Stündli", holding "Händli" while I hoped we would soon go to "Bettli" for you know whatli.

But all she did was drink a "Schlückli" mineral water, eat "Leckerli" and watch the "Vögeli" flying around the "Bäumli". Sometimes we would take the "Trämmli" and go to the "Zolli". Whenever I tried to get lovey-dovey, Ruthli would say: "Tschüssli, Schätzli!" and send me sadly on my "Wäägli" home. Now I'm sickly and cannot stoppy talkie like thisy. Must go to my shrinky doctorli. To form a diminutive in "Schwyzerdüütsch", just add 'li' to practically any word.

The Swiss will love you for it and give you a big "Schmützli!"

The IWCL Evening Group are at it again. They are organising a pre-Christmas Happy Hour.

Have you ever wondered where the expression "Happy Hour" comes from?
One possible origin of the term is from the United States Navy. In the 1920s, "Happy Hour" was slang for a scheduled entertainment period on board a ship during which boxing and wrestling bouts took place; this was a valuable opportunity for sailors to relieve the stress accumulated during the long periods at sea.

The idea of drinking before dinner has its roots in the Prohibition era. When the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act were passed banning alcohol consumption, citizens would host "cocktail hours", also known as "happy hours", at a speakeasy (an illegal drinking establishment) before eating at restaurants where alcohol could not be served.

Cocktail lounges continued the trend of drinking before dinner. "Happy hour" entered civilian use around 1960, especially after a Saturday Evening Post article on military life in 1959.

Sending a letter to Father Christmas in Ticino

The children wishing to write a letter to Father Christmas or Baby Jesus (Gesù bambino) will not be disappointed. Usually the post would send such "ficticious" letters back to the sender with the words "recipient unknown". However, the Swiss post has set up a special team located in Chiasso who will endeavor not only to respond to the letters but also send a small gift.

The six employees of the "Baby Jesus and Father Christmas" office are in charge of dividing the letters depending on their origin. If possible, they will send a reply signed by the Gesú bambino or Father Christmas in one of the four national languages or in English. They will also attach a gift and a little story.

This year, the protagonists of the story - designed in collaboration with WWF - will be a family of panda bears. A Christmas stamp has been created and the postmark originates directly from the Bethlehem post office in Berne.

Last year, Baby Jesus and Father Christmas received nearly 17,000 letters from children asking for a gift or sending good wishes. Most of the letters came from the Romandie, followed by Ticino, the Swiss German part and Switzerland's Romansh population. More than 200 letters arrived from abroad. In 96% of the cases the good souls at the Bethlehem post office managed to reply.

Therefore, if you're children wish to send a letter to Father Christmas or Gesù bambino, go ahead and give them a hand. Just make sure they include their home address in order to receive a timely answer.

Wondering what to do on a rainy afternoon with your kids in Lugano? Well, if you've seen all the kids' movies at CineStar, you've decorated the Christmas tree and can't face the crowds of shoppers in Grancia, here's an idea. Check out your local gym. The foundation IdeeSport has come up with a brilliant suggestion.

Every fifth child is overweight in Switzerland and half of all six year olds can no longer somersault. Now that's a scary idea! The solution is simple: more exercise!

This is where the new project "Open Gym Sunday" comes to the rescue. Gym facilities are available during the winter months every Sunday afternoon from 14:00 to 17:00.

A programme of motion skill and free games are offered. The progamme's general idea is to offer open gyms for free on Sunday afternoons and therefore a place of aggregation for boys and girls. With the opening of the gym, youngsters have the opportunity to play and relate to each other, while engaging in a healthy alternative to their sedentary habits. It aims encourage the non-competitive sports, reinforce team work and improve the childrens' physical well-being. Part of the objective is to promote and enhance social relationships between children and to integrate foreign and marginalized children.

A project leader, assisted by senior and junior coach, has the task of planning, organizing and managing activities gym. Volunteers are involved in the preparation and distribution of a healthy mid-afternoon snack.

When: Sunday afternoons from 14.00 to 17.00 between November and March (except holidays)
For whom: boys and girls between 6 and 11 years
Staff: the staff is a key element in order to guarantee the success of Open Gym Sunday. They are competent, motivated and enthusiastic.

December is the month for hearty Christmas carols, crumbly mince pieces and warming mulled wine. Hurry and hit the streets for some festive adventures – ice skating, theatre trips and puppet-shows galore.

Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling quite to opposite.

Here are some ideas to improve the Christmas spirit around you. Promise it does not take much...apart from a little personal effort!

Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environments a happy holiday. Say it with a smile.

Drop spare coins in the Salvation Army collection buckets.

Do something nice for someone. Offer to baby-sit so a friend can do her Christmas shopping, take cookies to your neighbors, or shovel an elderly neighbor's walk.

Volunteer your time to a worthy holiday cause. Even if you are busy, you can spare an hour or two to help people less fortunate than yourself.

Organize a drive at work, at school or in your neighborhood. Collect food and personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women.

Play Christmas music.

Watch Christmas movies. "It's a Wonderful Life" is a good one for reviving a flagging Christmas spirit, as is "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

Read "A Christmas Carol" and "A Child's Christmas in Wales."

Decorate your house for the holidays.

Hug your hubby and your kids and wish them a happy holiday season.

December 6th is a very important personal date. It brings back fond memories of my early childhood. Growing up in Zürich, Switzerland it is the day St.Nicolas (Samichlaus) comes to down bringing mandarines, nuts and chocolate to all the good girls and boys. At school we used to receive a Grittibänz (St.Nicolas bread). In exchange children are asked to recite a poem about Samichlaus.

7 facts about Santa's reindeer

" Ready?" asked Santa. "It's almost Christmas Day."

One of my most popular posts around Christmas is: How many reeindeer does Santa have?
I therefore decided to come up with some more fun facts on reindeer.

1.) The names of Santa's reindeer are from the poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas", more commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas," written by Clement Clarke Moore in 1823.

2.) Most of Santa’s reindeer have male-sounding names, such as Blitzer, Comet, and Cupid. However, male reindeers shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but female or castrati.

3.) Rudolph's story was originally written in verse by Robert L. May for the Montgomery Ward chain of department stores in 1939, and published as a book to be given to children in the store at Christmas time. According to this story, Rudolph's glowing red nose made him a social outcast among the other reindeer. However, one Christmas Eve Santa Claus was having a lot of difficulty making his flight around the world because it was too foggy. When Santa went to Rudolph's house to deliver his presents he noticed the glowing red nose in the darkened bedroom and decided it could be a makeshift lamp to guide his sleigh. He asked Rudolph to lead the sleigh for the rest of the night, Rudolph accepted and returned home a hero for having helped Santa Claus.

4.) Norwegian scientists have hypothesized that Rudolph’s red nose is probably the result of a parasitic infection of his respiratory system.

5.) Reindeer have large hooves that spread apart as they walk on the snow. They act like snowshoes and prevent the reindeer from sinking in the snow! Have you ever tried walking with snowshoes? These special hooves also help them look for food beneath the snow. The tendons in their hooves create a clicking sound when they walk.

6.) Reindeer have an excellent sense of smell. Because food is scarce in the Arctic, reindeer use their great sense of smell to detect food buried deep beneath the snow.

7.) Reindeer are excellent swimmers.

Swiss-American Thanksgiving recipies

This week is Thanksgiving and although I have lived thousands of miles away from the United States most of my life, rarely have I missed Thanksgiving. When I was a little girl the main reason for loving this special American holiday was that I was granted special permission to take the afternoon off from school. Today, I cook the meal myself for family and friends. Days spent in the kitchen are worth all the work when you finally sit down with a good glass of wine at hand and can enjoy your oeuvre d'art, because that is what is!

I have celebrated Thanksgiving in Zurich, Geneva, Washington D.C., Milano, Madrid and Lugano. This year we had an early Parisian Thanksgiving yesterday since Thursday is not a holiday in France.
16 Italians and 1 Swiss-American (the undersigned) gathered around a table turned out to be an animated afternoon to say the least. Lots of shouting, laughing and gesticulation combined with curiosity of discovering savoury-sweet Pumpkin/Maple syrup soup or bright orange sweet potatoe purée. A totally new culinary territory for Italians.

Over the years the following recipes have proven to be my absolute favourite. Go ahead and experiment yourself!

Maple-Roasted Turkey with Sage Butter
Ingredients:
1 sticks unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
1/4 bunch fresh sage, finely chopped
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 (12 to 14-pound) fresh turkey, giblets, neck, and liver discarded
8 strips bacon
1/2 cup maple syrup
2 tablespoons hot water or bouillon
Preparation:
Preheat the oven to 320 degrees F and remove the top rack of the oven.
Put the butter and sage in a mixing bowl and mash with a fork or spoon until the sage is well incorporated. Season with salt and pepper.
Rinse the bird thoroughly inside and out with cold water, and pat dry with paper towels. Sprinkle the cavity and skin liberally with salt and pepper. Using your fingers, gently lift the skin from the turkey breast and slip the remaining seasoned butter under, massaging the breast meat as you go. Truss the bird by crossing the legs over one another and tying with a piece of kitchen twine. Shingle the bacon strips over the breast so it's totally covered. Put the turkey on a rack in a large roasting pan, cover the turkey with aluminium foil, and place in the oven.
In a small bowl, stir the maple syrup with 2 tablespoons of hot water to thin. Roast the turkey for 2 hours, basting with the maple glaze every 30 minutes. Continue cooking until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the meaty part of the thigh registers 170 degrees F. The thigh juices will run clear when pricked with a knife, about 4 hours total (20 minutes per pound). About 1/2 hour before you think the turkey is done, remove the foil so that it can brown. When done take the turkey out of the oven and put the roasting pan on the stovetop. Transfer the turkey to a serving tray to rest at least 20 minutes before carving. Serve with Turkey Gravy.

Roasted Turkey Gravy
Ingredients:
5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 large, smoked turkey wing or 2 small ones
1 medium onion, quartered
2 carrots, chopped
1 ribs celery, chopped
1 head garlic, split through the equator
4 stems fresh sage
4 sprigs fresh thyme
6 parsley stems
1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
6 cups chicken stock
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Preparation:
Heat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Heat 3 tablespoons olive oil in a large stock pot over medium-high heat. Add the wing, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, and herbs, and cook for 5 minutes. Place in the oven and roast for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and place over medium heat. Remove the wing and set aside. Add the flour and let cook for about 1 minute. Add the stock and simmer until it has reduced by about 1/4, about 15 minutes. Strain the sauce and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper.

Cranberry Sauce
Ingredients:
1 pound fresh cranberries, approximately 4 cups
1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
1/4 cup 100 percent cranberry juice, not cocktail
1 cup honey
Preparation:
Wash the cranberries and discard any that are soft or wrinkled.
Combine the orange juice, cranberry juice and honey in a 2 quart saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 minutes.
Add the cranberries and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst and the mixture thickens. Do not cook for more than 15 minutes as the pectin will start to break down and the sauce will not set as well. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
Carefully spoon the cranberry sauce into a 3 cup mold. Place in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours and up to overnight.
To unmold and serve, immerse bottom of mold in hot water for 10 to 15 seconds and turn upside down on plate or serving dish. If necessary, carefully run a warm knife around the edge of the mold.

The Elixir of life is about to begin.

It's the time of year that all kids look forward to. The time of year when the magic hits Lugano. No, I'm not talking about Christmas. This enchantment comes in the form of a circus. A circus that was founded in 1803 and is part of the Swiss patrimony. Each and every year - religiously - Circus Knie tours all through Switzerland with 347 performances and ends its wonderful journey in Lugano.

I usually try to get tickets for the last show because you can feel the special atmosphere of all the artists trying to capture the moment by giving it their very best for their last performance of the season. Also the impressive outer tent, the entrance alley, cashier wagon and the huge KNIE luminous sign that you were so dreamingly looking up to, have all dissappeared by the time you leave the show. All 200 persons from 16 different nations and over 100 animals are on their way home to Rapperswil to get a well-deserved break before starting to pratice for next year's performance.

My Dad used to take me to Zirkus Knie - religiously - in Zürich in the spring when I was a little girl. I thoroughly enjoy keeping up this tradtion by taking my kids to the Circo Knie every fall in Lugano.

Every year when December comes around not only my kids but my hubby also look forward to receiving their Advent Calendar. I thought I'd share this tradition with my readers while giving them ideas for a home-made calendar. Preparing Advent calendars by filling them with little surprises is half the fun of it.

Notte del racconto 2011 - Other worlds

"La notte del racconto" (The Night of story telling) will be held throughout Switzerland on Friday, November 11, 2011.

"La notte del racconto" is based on a simple yet brilliant concept: to tell a story, to read aloud, throughout all of Switzerland, the same night. The idea is to let children and adults enjoy a special moment full of mysterious charm by returning to the ancient tradition of listening and re-inventing a model of communication which has nowadays become rarer and rarer. More importantly still than the natural pleasure of the narrative, it permits to unite generations for a fun event. Story telling, reading aloud, listening, all actions that take on a special and precious value in our time devoted to the image, speed, fragmentation, disintegration, and impatience.

The theme this year will be: OTHER WORLDS

Other worlds, meaning worlds different from ours, are at the base of this year's "Notte del racconto". The theme is broad and allows the organizers (usually schools) to move in diverse contexts: extraterrestrial worlds, fantasy worlds, real worlds, but different from ours (the life of the nomadic people, the Indians, the inhabitants of the North Pole, etc.) fairy worlds or magic worlds are some of the possibilites for those who want to attend the event.

So, don't miss this special moment and check with your local school to see where and when you can catch a mysterious story that will accompany you into your dreams tomorrow night.

I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me today, and we all could probably use more calm in our lives.

A renowned psycho-analyst on TV this morning said the way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started.

So I looked around my house to see the things I'd started and hadn't finished. As a result I have managed to finish off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of Chardonnay, a bodle of Baileys, a butle of wum, a pockage of Prungles, tha mainder of bot Prozic and Valiuminun scriptins, the res of the chesescke an a box a chocletz. Children who grow up overseas, whose parents' careers keep them abroad for most, or all of their formative years, are called - Third Culture Kids.

Studies show that these kids mature faster, are more independent and introspective, more sophisticated and cosmopolitan, and far more knowledgeable about the world than their compatriots from their country of birth.

There are 4 common themes that give these kids an edge or advantage in today's world.

Change - They know how to cope with high change, because of the constant change of location, friends, schools and cultural experiences they have been exposed to. They are in a continual process of adapting and relating the culture(s) they are coming from, with the new cultures they are entering every few years.

Relationships - Before the introduction of social networking, they learned to make friends quickly, and also to let them go just as quickly, because of the many relocations they went through.

However this traumatic aspect is becoming a thing of the past, with the trend to social networking sites like FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, and Skype that allow them to maintain close, day-to-day communications no matter where they are in the world. These kids are now able to keep a network of close friendships even though they are not in physical proximity.

This is a global revolution that is sure to have implications professionally, as they become adults and move into the work world. Hopefully, it will also influence the future of world affairs in a positive way. It's interesting to note that President Barack Obama was a TCK.

WorldView - They see the commonality between cultures, viewing themselves first as humans, in a Global World, rather than being connected to any particular culture. Because they have friends all over the world, they have compassion, empathy and concern for people who live in other parts of the world, whose culture they have known personally.

They understand that one can hold a personal truth, and still acknowledge the existence of other truths being held in other cultures, without necessarily being impelled to change the views of others to conform with one's own worldview.

Cultural Identity - As a consequence of their global living experiences, they are not attached to any particular culture. Third Culture Kids can feel at home anywhere on the planet. They also have the capacity to select and integrate aspects from many different cultures that they have experienced. This gives them a strong cultural openness and understanding that is beyond the grasp of mono-cultural children.

They do not feel separate or isolated, as they move around the planet. They carry an inner confidence that if necessary, they could survive anywhere. They are truly 'Inhabitants of the World' - Global Citizens who can take a job in any culture, and fit in.

November comes from the Latin word "novem" which means nine. It was originally the ninth month of the year in the Roman calendar which began with March. When January and February were added to the Roman calendar, November became the eleventh month of the Gregorian calendar. November is one of the four months that has thirty days.

All Saints' Day, often shortened to All Saints, is a solemnity celebrated on November 1st by parts of Western Christianity, and on the first Sunday after Pentecost in Eastern Christianity, in honor of all the saints, known and unknown.

All Saints Day, the day on which Catholics celebrate all the saints, known and unknown, is a surprisingly old feast. It arose out of the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of saints on the anniversary of their martyrdom. When martyrdoms increased during the persecutions of the late Roman Empire, local dioceses instituted a common feast day in order to ensure that all martyrs were properly honored.

The current date of November 1 was instituted by Pope Gregory III (731-741), when he consecrated a chapel to all the martyrs in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and ordered an annual celebration. This celebration was originally confined to the diocese of Rome, but Pope Gregory IV (827-844) extended the feast to the entire Church and ordered it to be celebrated on November 1.

The vigil or eve of the feast, October 31, is commonly known as All Hallows Eve, or Halloween. Despite concerns among some Christians (including some Catholics) in recent years about the "pagan origins" of Halloween, the vigil was celebrated from the beginning—long before Irish practices, stripped of their pagan origins (just as the Christmas tree was stripped of similar connotations), were incorporated into popular celebrations of the feast.

Tomorrow is a birthday! It is not my birthday and not my children's birthday! There are no decorations hanging across the house and no birthday cake decorated. Nevertheless, I feel as happy as if it were Christmas Eve tonight. There will be no presents to open tomorrow and many of my friends won't even realize that tomorrow will be a very special day for me.

One year ago, on October 27th I entered a new universe, submerged myself into it and never looked back. I started blogging. I cannot even tell you why I began. An American girl I had met a month earlier during a dinner party had spoken to me about her blog. I had no clue what blogging meant. On that Wednesday afternoon while staring into my computer screen I decided to test my IT knowledge by creating a blog. It started as a challenge and became an obsession. I googled endlessly for tutorials. Every single part of my blogdesign as well as all the lists are homemade. I did not stop rearranging the layout until I had it just the way I wanted it. At this point blogging had turned into a passion!

Further I realized that I had stumbled onto a market niche. What was the likelihood of finding an English-language guide on Lugano? Et voilà: Expat with Kids was born! I tried to come up with a mix of useful information about life with kids in Lugano, yummy recipes, inspiring photos and fun facts that would make readers smile and want to come back for more.

I refused to have any advertising. This blog is MiNE!!!

I have been posting nearly every day. To date my count is 369 posts in twelve months. I have never run out of ideas to write about and I love sharing wacky information. Did I mention that I moved away from Lugano four months ago? Never mind: my heart remains in Lugano and so does my blog.

I am grateful for all my readers that follow me. 101 connected on Google friends, 82 via facebook, 68 by twitter and 26 through Networked blogs. Feedback and comments are not frequent but via the grapevine I do get the impression that my blog has made its way into blogger's world thanks to 43'000 pageviews.

Another fantastic fact about blogging is the first-hand information that is available. When moving to Paris this summer I never even bothered buying a guidebook. I discovered all I needed to know thanks to my blogging "friends" and believe me there is a whole army of them in Paris! There's lots of good advice out there - you just need to ask! Discovering other blogs and bloggers is half the fun.

While Expat with Kids is a personal blog, I try not to make it too personal. No portrait photos, no names. I guess if I had to put my feelings into words, I'd say that this blog is a story about our lives, not the story of our lives. A little bit of distance works for me. Nevertheless my personal branding is bright and clear: it's PiNK. Haven't you noticed?

The history of Halloween can be traced back 2,000 years. It was during these ancient times in Europe that the Celts celebrated the beginning of winter on the evening of October 31st. November 1st was the first day of their new year and it also marked the first day of winter. They believed that death was strongly linked to the long and bitter winter. The Celts thought that during the winter the dead and the living existed simultaneously because it was on this day that the dead roamed the earth. Samhain was the name they gave to their celebration of the dead on the evening of October 31st.

However, when Christians began to gain authority in the 800s, the history of Halloween was forever changed; November 1st became known as All Saints Day or All-Hallows. It is believed that the Christians slightly altered the holiday into a church related celebration, honoring deceased saints. Not unlike Celtic tradition though, the Christians too honored the dead on this day. The evening of October 31st soon became known as All-Hallows Eve and was eventually changed to Halloween.

The tradition of wearing Halloween costumes stems from an Irish and Scottish ritual known as “guising.” In the 19th century, children would dress up in various costumes and go house to house, looking for gifts of coins, food, or snacks. One of the earliest records of guising is in 1895, where Scottish masqueraders carried lanterns made out of turnips and visited homes to be rewarded with fruit, money, or cakes. When the Scottish and Irish migrated to America, they brought along their guising tradition.

Coming home!

We left Lugano on June 20th. We came back October 21st for a holiday. What we did not expect were the emotions that overwelmed us. We were coming home again. Never mind that our house is not ours anymore, the school is not where the kids are enrolled any longer, the gym pass does not grant us access and we don't receive the local supermarket weekly bulletin, Breganzona is still our home.

Over four years ago we started our Swiss adventure and began to sow seeds. What we never realized is how much they have grown and how strong the roots have become. I dare say our friends have felt a similar excitement upon our arrival. The kindness and openess with which eveyone has received us touched us more than we could have imagined. From East European immgrants, Caribbean emigrants, Italian expats to hockey-loving, die-hard Ticinese, each and every one of them made us feel at home for a couple of hours over a cup of coffee, an afternoon spent in the park or a dinner given in our honour.

Over the past 40 years I have always considered Zurich my home. Today I admit that the Ticino has stolen a part of my heart and it will forever be piece of me and my family.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October, the day on which the Organization was founded in 1945.

The objectives of World Food Day are to:
- encourage attention to agricultural food production
- encourage economic and technical cooperation among developing countries
- encourage the participation of rural people, particularly women and the least privileged categories, in decisions and activities influencing their living conditions
- heighten public awareness of the problem of hunger in the world
- promote the transfer of technologies to the developing world

InterNations Get-Together in Lugano

InterNations Lugano are happy to invite you to their October 2011 get-together, to mingle, catch up with friends, and meet new people.

InterNations.org is an International social network service, launched in 2007 and designed with expatriates in mind. The website was founded by three young German businessmen, two former McKinsey consultants and an n-tv editor. They had come to recognize the need for a global online network for expatriates when they were living abroad themselves. So they decided to come up with a web-based dot-com solution to address issues like relocation, intercultural competence, cross-cultural communications and everyday life as an expat.

All you Expat mums: ever wondered how to cope when the going gets tough? Mary Todd, a management consultant and expat wife herself, has identified six steps to transition through the expat cycle and thrive in an expat assignment.

To successfully apply the following steps requires an open mind and positive attitude, a desire to examine what makes you tick, a healthy dose of determination, a willingness to communicate openly with your spouse, a commitment to make the most of the situation and a group of family and friends to encourage and empathise.

Step 1: Build awareness
The first step is to understand how moving to a foreign country has affected you by considering all dimensions of your situation as dispassionately as possible. Use this example to prompt your own thinking.

Step 2: Accept need to change
Because so much has changed, an expat spouse needs to face the reality of reinventing herself. She does this by acknowledging that she is the one who has to adapt. Spend time looking through your personalised version of the example in Step 1 as you consider where and how you will change.

Step 3: Discover possibilities
With awareness and acceptance it is now time to take charge of your life again. Each individual has a blend of roles that forms part of her identity (e.g. mother, professional, mentor, wife, friend, care giver and so on), a personal set of interests, strengths, and skills and a range of motivating activities.

With an open mind and deliberate effort, opportunities abound for an expat spouse: to develop latent talents, to do something you have never had time for, to take a different career direction, to build new skills, to return to school, to travel, to learn a new language or refresh one that is rusty, to get involved in community work, to learn about a new culture and traditions.

White Toblerone Mousse au Chocolate recipe

I miss my Swiss chocolate, especially my Toblerone, and in particular my white Toblerone! Parisian macarons are delicious but it's just not chocolate. So - feeling a little homesick - I dug out one of my favourite recipes.

My dark Mousse au Chocolate recipe is my most popular post so far in my blogging career. I have therefore decided to share my white Toblerone Mousse au Chocolate recipe because the two desserts are best when served together.

Ingredients:
300g white Toblerone
2 eggs
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
4dl cream

Preparation:
1.) Break Toblerone into pieces and melt in a double boiler (40 ° C). Remove bowl from water boiler and stir until smooth.
2.) Mix eggs and powdered sugar in a separate bowl. Beat until mixture is foamy and light.
3.) Add the chocolate immediately and mix well.
4.) Beat the cream until stiff and carefully fold into the chocolate mixture.
5.) Cover the mousse with plastic wrap and place in fridge three to four hours or over night.

To serve:
Scoop the mousse with two spoons, arrange on dessert plates and decorate as desired with whipped cream and fruit.

I love to smile. I smile at my hubby when I feel in love or when I want him to do something. I smile at my kids because I love them to bits or because I don't want to lose my patience. I smile at strangers I cross in the road because I'm in a good mood. I smile a the driver who is cursing me because I just took a wrong turn (that really throws them!!!). I smile at nature or a new born baby and remind myself what a wonderful day it is!

A smile works wonders. A smile is free. It can give you so much in return. In Latin cultures it can get you a long way when you need something done. In Nordic cultures it can break the ice and maybe the routine?

I have come a cross a list of 100 ways to make people smile. I thought I'd share the first 10 with you. Go ahead, go out and try it! The other 90 ways will follow in time.

1. Call an old friend, just to say hi.
2. Hold a door open for a stranger.
3. Invite someone to lunch. (Don't worry about the cooking, get take-away and serve it on your Sunday dishes. The idea is to have fun!)
4. Compliment someone on his or her appearance.
5. Ask a coworker or a friend for their opinion on a project.
6. Bring cookies to work. (Or to school)
7. Let someone cut in during rush hour traffic. (Keep smiling!)
8. Leave a waitress or waiter a big tip. (it just might make their day)
9. Tell a cashier to have a nice day. ( I love this one!)
10. Call your parents.

On the first weekend in October, Lugano celebrates the beginning of Autumn with a festival dedicated to local products.

The Autumn festival concludes the open-air events with a large fair in the pedestrian zone of Lugano.

In the classic city scenario, in a grand choreography of colors and tastes, you will be able to find the typical grottini, a lot of folkloric music, Ticinese gastronomic delights and above all the celebrations of the grape and wine. The center of the city will welcome the visitors in numerous grottini operated by local companies which will offer typical Ticinese specialties, such as polenta with stew or beans and mortadella or roast pork, risotto, minestrone, gnocchi and many other exquisite local delights. Yummy!!!

Get ready this weekend. There is a fantastic sporting opportunity for you and your kids coming up. It is a social happening that you cannot miss. Head down town this weekend and enjoy the last summer vibes during the annual event of Stralugano.

Stralugano's philosophy extends from elite athletes to the occasional runner but - above all - it has a big heart. A heart logo displays the sensitivity not only in sports but towards neighbours and especially towards those who are not lucky enough to live full and free movement of their body.

Therefore, since it's creation 6 years ago, Stralugano has paid particular attention in supporting worthy organizations and enhance their sensitivity.

This year Stralugano renews its support of the Telethon movement by providing visibility throughout the event as well as financial contribution.

The Stralugano is a run and fun event: a folklore festival is held at the "Stralugano Village" that includes amusements, music, fitness, shopping and support for various charity associations. The festival kicks off on Saturday afternoon and continues all Sunday.

The London travel writer, Diccon Bewes, has lived in Bern for five years. What could be more obvious, therefore, than writing a book about Switzerland, this island within Europe. "How come that the Alpine republic has managed to make its products famous the the world over, but hasn't produced many well-known citizens?" Bewes wondered. So, he bought himself a rail pass and set off to find out "how this enigmatic country ticks".

Facts about snoring!

Why am I up at 5:30 in the morning? Yes, admitteldly it is partly due to our new exciting environment. Some of you might be thinking: "Hey, you're in Paris! Why would you want to sleep anyway?"

I cherish my sleep. I love cuddling beneath my duvet and snuggling up for a good night sleep. Only I have not been getting much of that lately, thanks to my snoring hubby!!! What to do?

Since I'm up I thought I'd share some interesting facts about snoring with my readers published by www.britishsnoring.co.uk:

1.) The 3 main reasons for snoring are: being overweight, smoking and drinking alcohol.

2.) Snoring sound is air turbulance vibrating the structures in the ‘upper airway’.

3.) Snoring sounds range from 50dB to 100dB - the equivalent to a pneumatic drill. (My husband is in the upper range!)

4.) Snoring can be hereditary - nearly 70% of snorers have a familial link.

5.) Bed partners of snorers report they have just 3-5 hours sleep per night. (Yes, that would be me at the moment!)

6.) Bed partners of snorers visit their GP more frequently than bed partners of non-snorers.

7.) Snorers and their bed partners are more likely to be hard of hearing than non-snorers and their partners. (Oh, gosh no, don't say that!)

8.) Over one third of couples report disharmony within the relationship due to snoring. (Mmmmmhhhh, I wonder why?!?!)

9.) Sleep quality rather than quantity is more of an issue. Poor sleep quality exacerbates poor health. (And VERY bad moods in my case)

10.) Sleep loss affects newly learned skills more than well known skills. (Keep in mind!)

11.) Despite evidence to the contrary, bed partners report better sleep quality when sleeping with their snoring partner than when they sleep alone. (Yeah, right?)

12.) The louder you snore, the more likely you are to be overweight. ( Luckily NOT the case)

13.) In 1910 we were sleeping for approximately 9 hours per night. In 2009 we sleep for around 6-7 hours. (That's why we call them "The good ol'days")

The "USS New York" is the seventh ship of the United States Navy to be named after the state of New York. She rose out of the ashes of 9/11 - and now it’s time to go back to her birthplace.

The ship is notable for using steel that was salvaged from the World Trade Center, after it was destroyed in the September 11 attacks. It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section. Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto: Strength forged through sacrifice. Never Forget!

The ship sailed down the Hudson River on Thursday and her passengers included 170 members of the 9/11 Families Association, which includes first responders and families of victims. She will anchor near ground zero for ceremonies marking the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks this year.

With the words Man your ship and bring her to life the world will change, at least for us. She will never fill the hole, but she will fill our hearts.

You know you're a Third Culture Kids when ...

You know you are a Third Culture Kid (TKC) when ....

- “Where are you from?” has more than one reasonable answer.
- You’ve said that you’re from foreign country X, and (if you live in America) your audience has asked you which US state X is in.
- You flew before you could walk.
- You speak two languages, but can’t spell in either.
- You feel odd being in the ethnic majority.
- You have three passports.
- You have a passport but no driver’s license.
- You go into culture shock upon returning to your “home” country.- Your life story uses the phrase “Then we moved to…” three (or four, or five…) times.
- You wince when people mispronounce foreign words.
- You don’t know whether to write the date as day/month/year, month/day/year, or some variation thereof.
- The best word for something is the word you learned first, regardless of the language.
- You get confused because US money isn’t colour-coded.
- You think VISA is a document that’s stamped in your passport, not a plastic card you carry in your wallet.
- You own personal appliances with 3 types of plugs, know the difference between 110 and 220 volts, 50 and 60 cycle current, and realize that a trasnsformer isn’t always enough to make your appliances work.
- You fried a number of appliances during the learning process.
- You think the Pledge of Allegiance might possibly begin with “Four-score and seven years ago….”- Half of your phone calls are unintelligible to those around you.
- You believe vehemently that football is played with a round, spotted ball.
- You consider a city 500 miles away “very close.”
- You get homesick reading National Geographic.
- You cruise the Internet looking for fonts that can support foreign alphabets.
- You think in the metric system and Celsius.
- You may have learned to think in feet and miles as well, after a few years of living (and driving) in the US. (But not Fahrenheit. You will *never* learn to think in Fahrenheit).
- You haggle with the checkout clerk for a lower price.
- Your minor is a foreign language you already speak.- When asked a question in a certain language, you’ve absentmindedly respond in a different one.
- You miss the subtitles when you see the latest movie.
- You’ve gotten out of school because of monsoons, bomb threats, and/or popular demonstrations.
- You speak with authority on the subject of airline travel.
- You have frequent flyer accounts on multiple airlines.
- You constantly want to use said frequent flyer accounts to travel to new places.
- You know how to pack.
- You have the urge to move to a new country every couple of years.
- The thought of sending your (hypothetical) kids to public school scares you, while the thought of letting them fly alone doesn’t at all.
- You think that high school reunions are all but impossible.
- You have friends from 29 different countries.
- You sort your friends by continent.
- You have a time zone map next to your telephone.
- You realize what a small world it is, after all.

Third Culture Kids - Characteristics

“A Third Culture Kid is a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside their parents’ culture."

There are different characteristics that impact the typical Third Culture Kid:

- TCKs are 4 times as likely as non-TCKs to earn a bachelor's degree (81% vs 21%)
- 40% earn an advanced degree (as compared to 5% of the non-TCK population.)
- 45% of TCKs attended 3 universities before earning a degree.
- 44% earned undergraduate degree after the age of 22.
- Educators, medicine, professional positions, and self employment are the most common professions for TCKs.
-TCKs are unlikely to work for big business, government, or follow their parents' career choices. "One won't find many TCKs in large corporations. Nor are there many in government ... they have not followed in parental footsteps".
- 90% feel "out of sync" with their peers.
- 90% report feeling as if they understand other cultures/peoples better than the average American.
- 80% believe they can get along with anybody.
- Divorce rates among TCKs are lower than the general population, but they marry older (25+).
- Military brats, however, tend to marry earlier.
- Linguistically adept (not as true for military ATCKs.)
- A study whose subjects were all "career military brats"—those who had a parent in the military from birth through high school—shows that brats are linguistically adept.
- Teenage TCKs are more mature than non-TCKs, but ironically take longer to "grow up" in their 20s.
- More welcoming of others into their community.
- Lack a sense of "where home is" but often nationalistic.
- Some studies show a desire to "settle down" others a "restlessness to move".
- Depression and suicide are more prominent among TCK's.

Third Culture Kids - Definition

Lately I have come across the TCK (Third Culture Kids) definition repeatedly, a term that became popular in the early 1980's. Personally I discovered TCK back in 2005 when I read David Pollock and Ruth van Reken's book "Third Culture Kids". I was amazed to discover that there was actually a name to they way I had been living.

The authors explore the experiences of those who have become known as "Third Culture Kids" - children who grow up or spend a significant part of their childhood living abroad. The book is rich with real-life anecdotes and examines the nature of the TCK kid experience and its effects on maturing, developing a sense of identity, and adjusting to one's "passport country" upon return. The authors give readers an understanding of the challenges and benefits of the TCK life and provide practical suggestions and advice on maximizing those benefits.

Definition of Third Culture Kids:
“A third culture kid is a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside their parents’ culture. The third culture kid builds relationships to all the cultures, while not having full ownership in any. Although elements from each culture are assimilated into the third culture kid’s life experience, the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of the same background, other TCKs.”

Who are the Third Culture Kids?
They come from many backgrounds - Military/Army BRATS, Non-military government like diplomats' kids, Missionary kids, Business kid, intergovernmental agencies, educators, international non-governmental organizations, media, etc. Before World War II, 66% of TCKs came from missionary families, and 16% came from business families. After World War II, with the increase of international business and the rise of two international superpowers, the composition of international families changed. Sponsors are generally broken down into five categories: missionary (17%), business (16%), government (23%), military (30%), and "other" (14%). Some TCK families migrate for work independently of any organization based in their country of origin.

Some TCK's are moving between countries all their childhood, some have stayed only in one country, others have moved abroad, repatriated, and then relocated overseas again.

There are some characteristics that are common to the majority of TCK's – They better understand other cultures, have eaten different types of food, speak more than one language fluently, and have friends in many places. However, each child has his own amazing story, and his own way to cope with the challenges; some resent their parents for taking them away from their friends, school, family and country. Others might embrace the adventure, enjoy it, and make lots of friends in the host country.

The hardest thing for TCK'S is saying goodbye to their friends and to a place they used to call home. The world as they knew is gone forever. Only the memories are left, and many TCK's will not see their friends ever again. It is a great feeling of loss, and a big hole in their life.

Having said that, much of the research shows that Expat kids grow up to be diversified, tolerant, intelligent, savvy, articulate, worldly wise and interesting adults. Just check out this video.
